Organization Name: Energy Safety Response Group

Location: Delaware (HQ) and Piqua (Testing Laboratory)

Industry: Energy and Utilities

What We Do:

At ESRG, we think of ourselves as firefighters working for firefighters. That’s because – while we possess nearly 150 years of combined experience in firefighting, training, fire and failure investigation, risk assessment, hazardous materials, and energy storage safety and testing – ESRG is, at its core, a group of fire service veterans who are passionate about safety. In fact, our founders began as firefighters. It is our mission to provide safety services that save our clients time, money, and – above all else – improve safety.

We operate in four main areas:

  • Testing

  • Permitting/Project Review/Project Development

  • Public Safety, Training, and Emergency Response Planning

  • Emergency Response, Subject Matter Expertise, Forensic Analysis, and Disposal

What’s a Trend You’re Seeing/Prediction for the Future:

One of the most accepted fixed costs for businesses is insurance because the business model for insurance has historically been stable. However, a new normal appears to be emerging as a reflection of the world we live in, which has seen increased natural disasters, a global pandemic, and increasingly difficult and complex businesses and products upon which to assess risk. Insurance companies (and the insured parties) are going to increasingly rely upon big data to form better risk models for products, businesses.

A Problem/Challenge We Are Working To Solve:

The main product and industry we operate with is large energy storage systems – typically arrays of batteries connected to the electric grid. The rate of the deployment of these systems is increasing exponentially globally. In the past 3 or so years, there have also been notable safety events, including fires and explosions. In the U.S., more attention was paid to safety following an explosion in April 2019 in Surprise, AZ. Multiple reports found that one of the problems was a lack of understanding about what was going on inside of the “black box” of the energy storage container during the event. We are putting together a digital emergency response platform that can tie together a lot of telemetries such as video, drone footage, gas sensing, temperature sensing, and alarms to provide more granular picture of what is occurring and how to address an event.

Organization Slogan: Bringing engineering and public safety together.

Why is Ohio is a great place to do business?

I grew up and went to college in the cornfields of Illinois, then moved to Washington, DC for 10 years. I have been in the Cleveland Metro for almost 4 years now. What I like about Ohio is that both geographically and culturally, it is between those two points in a lot of ways. Ohio is populated enough to have everything you really need or want without being overcrowded and overpriced. Ohioans are optimistic but also practical and pragmatic.
