Dr. Joseph Shields is Vice President for Research and Creative Activity, Dean of the Graduate College, and Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Ohio University. In this episode, we speak with Dr. Shields about the potential, power and payoff of University-Industry collaborations across Ohio.

Among his many duties, Dr. Shields oversees technology transfer and economic development activities supported by the Innovation Center, an award-winning on-campus business incubator for technology startup companies. He also led implementation of a successful multi-million-dollar internal program of tiered funding to incentivize and grow interdisciplinary partnerships around a broad theme of innovation.

We also discuss the Ohio Innovation Exchange. The OIEx connects businesses and industry with professors, equipment and facilities available at Ohio research universities. By providing access to thousands of faculty and resources from campuses and laboratories across the state, OIEx fosters economic development and intellectual advancement across Ohio and the globe.

OIEx is an initiative of the Ohio Department of Higher Education, developed in collaboration with Ohio universities with industry support from the Ohio Manufacturing Institute.
