Name: Caitlin Nowlin

Job: Program Manager (Tech Outreach), Hyland

City: Cleveland, Ohio

Q: Tell us about your job.

As a tech outreach program manager, I help create, enhance and manage computer science programs designed for students in middle school to high school. These programs expose students to computer science and give them an opportunity to learn something they may not have the chance to learn in school.

Q: How did you get into tech?

My first job after college was as an IT Recruiter for an IT Staffing firm. I’ve been in the tech industry ever since.

Q: What can Ohio do to support and promote women in tech?

I don’t think there are enough programs in place to highlight the amazing women in the tech space. I was happily surprised when I found out that OhioX was creating an award to recognize women in the tech space. It’s something that I hadn’t seen before, and I think that it was well overdue.

Q: What makes Hyland unique?

Hyland has been investing in Tech Outreach since 2014. The skills we are teaching students don’t have much to do with the software products that we develop and sell as a company. We are simply teaching students the skills they could use if they work at a company like Hyland one day. I would love to see more tech companies investing in programs like these, and I’m always open to speaking with companies who want to start!

Q: Why is it important to give students the opportunity to learn about computer science?

No matter what career students end up in, learning the fundamentals of computer science are going to be a huge benefit to them. Learning things like problem solving and logic are skills that you can use in any job.

Q: What do you do for fun when you’re not working?

When I’m not working, I’m either hanging out with my fiancé or watching quality reality TV. I’m a big fan of anything on Bravo TV 😊
