Meet Matt Buder Shapiro. Founder & Chief Marketing Officer of MedPilot.
Name: Matt Buder Shapiro

Q: What do you do at MedPilot?
I am the Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Officer of MedPilot, a leading CRM designed to help healthcare providers and revenue cycle management companies communicate better with patients. We are proud to have helped over one million patients better understand and navigate their healthcare experience. My job is developing MedPilot's brand and patient engagement strategy and all the other fun things that come along with founding a company!
Q: What’s a problem that you are working to solve?
Healthcare providers and billing companies don't have an efficient way to communicate with their patients about administrative and financial matters, so they rely on mailing statements, time-consuming phone calls, and traditional collection agencies. To make matters worse, patients are confused by their bills, frustrated with the time it takes to talk to a live human being, and desperate for an easier way to understand and resolve their balances.
MedPilot navigates patients through their healthcare experience. Our engagement platform personalizes outreach based on a variety of patient characteristics, then uses machine learning to optimize communications between the health care provider and patient. We are excited to boast a 97% patient satisfaction score.
Q: What’s a lesson you’ve learned that has helped shaped your work?
It's essential not to get caught on the highs or lows of this crazy entrepreneurial journey. Every little good or bad thing that happened to us used to consume me completely. After a while, though, I realized that if you're going to saddle up for the marathon of building a company, you better keep focused no matter how many exciting and challenging aspects occur.
Q: What’s a trend in technology or innovation that you believe doesn’t get enough attention?
We waste billions of dollars on confusing and expensive snail mail patient statements. We see a world soon where all healthcare communications and payments are primarily based online.
Q: What’s one moonshot idea that could help make Ohio a world leader in technology and innovation?
We need a dramatic change in our educational infrastructure. Everything starts with education. We won't be able to compete with the other significant cities until we start providing world-class educational opportunities for everyone, no matter what part of town you grow up.
Q: What’s a recent book, podcast or news story that you found interesting?
I just finished "Destiny of the Republic" about President Garfield. He is undoubtedly an obscure President, who only served for a short period before being assassinated. Still, this book did an unbelievable job of bringing his incredibly admirable story to life. I would never have picked this book up if my grandma hadn't recommended it to me, but I'm so thankful I did. While it was, unfortunately, brief, he truly made Ohio proud.
Q: What's your favorite place in Ohio?
It doesn't get better than the Muni-Lot for a Brown's game. The energy is palpable. Here we go Brownies!!!
Q: What makes Ohio special to you?
The people hands down. It's not just that I have family here either. Ohio has a truly warm community of people that look out for each other and genuinely want to see our hometown succeed. From a business perspective, the best decision we ever made was moving our company from New York to Ohio. We knew we'd have access to the best talent we could find for a healthcare tech company and would be arms-length from the world's best healthcare companies, but we've also been blown away by the support from the investment community and how willing everyone is to make introductions and help out in any way they can.
